🖋 For information, painting was one of the important crafts in medieval Armenia.
The 13th century historian Kirakos Gandzaketsi mentions the painting craftsmen. Speaking about the collection of taxes during the rule of the Mongols, the historian also remembers the “shaparar” (painter) artisans among the taxpayers. This testimony of Gandzaketsu confirms that the number of dyers was large in both villages and cities, who, among other craftsmen, were subjected to coercion. There is also a mention in one of the inscriptions of Ani, which talks about the abolition of taxes in Ani, including those of dyers.
