The medicine of Armenia, being an integral part of Armenian culture, has a history of over three thousand years. Relying on folk medicine traditions, it accumulated the experience and knowledge of many generations of doctors on medicinal qualities of plant, animal and mineral substances of the native country, which is reflected in the medieval phytotherapy and pharmacology literature. In ancient times the medicinal herbs of Armenian highlands enjoyed a great reputation, being exported to several countries in East and West and were found in ancient pharmacology books. Herodotus, Strabo, Xenophon, Pliny the Elder and others spoke in their works on Armenia’s drugs and praise their healing power. Xenophon in his Anabasis mentioned about sweet Armenian perfume, the secret of its preparation was known only to the Armenians.
Aromatic perfumes had a value of gold, and only rich people had the right to use them. Fragrant oils were not only a luxury: they were used to cure diseases, to promote the delivery, to ease aches and to regulate the mental tranquility, as well as to use in magic. The centers of human sense of smell are located in the part of the brain cortex, which is responsible for the emotional sphere. That is why all existing scents in the nature are of “emotional tone.” The aromatherapy is based on this phenomenon. Essential oils can be used not only to balance emotions, but also to relieve stress, to regulate the tension of central nervous system and braking.
If we add that the central nervous system regulates the activity of internal organs, it becomes clear that the aromatherapy affects the entire body system and, most importantly, the oils help to identify the body into its stored reserves. This is why in recent years many medicines are prepared on oil basis, which were registered in pharmacological handbooks. Practically all essential oils possess germicidal, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory qualities.
All oils, without exception, affect the nervous system and are divided into the following groups: enhancers, adaptogens and tranquilizers. All perfumes have beneficial impact on the emotional sphere and bioenergetics, having qualities of “establishing order” and curing the skin. The oils also stimulate the body’s self-regulation. Thereby, each type of oil has its own unique quality and scope of usage. The aromatherapy contributes to the elimination of negative feelings, including depression. This therapy works on psychological and biological level and affects not only the mental, but also physical health. The sense of smell can impact on our mood and change our emotions.
